Our Guide To Keepsakes

Drawing from the wisdom and experiences from our community of NMJ mothers, we’ve curated a guide to childhood keepsakes — here, discover which pieces to preserve and how they can evolve into cherished tokens to symbolise the growth of your most loved little ones.

Watching our little loved ones grow and witnessing the fleeting moments of childhood, we want to hold onto each moment and every precious vessel that contains them. There are many treasures that can hold sentimental value, yet deciding what exactly to keep can feel overwhelming when so many special pieces are imbued with memories and emotions that we hold dear.

Hospital Wristband From Their Birth: So we can never forget how small they were when they first joined our sides.

Newspaper From The Day Of Their Birth: Marking the moment our lives changed for the better, you can later reflect on the latest events and stories from that very day.

Their First Pair Of Shoes: Marking the start of their journey and the many life paths they will walk.

Hand and Footprint From Their First Month Of Life: The hands that clung to you as they joined us earthside — now, you’ll never forget their tiny features.

Artwork From Each Year Of Their Childhood: A piece that holds a treasured memory, so you can reminisce on what they loved, what excites them and how they pictured the world as they grew up.

A Holiday Memento: Token from one of their first holidays, so you can one day recount the experiences you shared with your little one during the most wonderful time of the year.

Their Favourite Book: Hold onto those quiet moments filled with the endless readings of their most beloved tale.

Letter To Santa, Tooth Fairy Or The Easter Bunny: Remember the candid and sometimes quirky ways in which they expressed their greatest childhood desires.

School Report From Each Year: To reflect on how their personality evolves amongst their classmates, from the cheeky, the studious to the energetic.

Polaroid From Every First Day Of School: Capturing every new school year, recall how they grew and changed as each year passed.

From Natalie

"As a self-proclaimed sentimental hoarder, I have made an effort to hold on to special keepsakes throughout my little girl’s early years. From baby beanies to first ballet shoes, polaroids, tickets and shells collected together on faraway beaches. These precious tokens weave a tapestry of memories formed together which I hope will always connect us.

Photos tell a story, but objects have a way of tapping in to sense-memory in a profound and powerful way. It’s special to watch my eldest start to collect her own little keepsakes as she grows up, marking memories in her own special way."

From Ella

"Admittedly, I wish I had kept more pieces as keepsakes; however, I do see so much value in keeping the beautiful handmade pieces that my Mother-in-law knitted for Billie. They are actually incredible in both design, quaility and sentiment, and I see these pieces being handed down for generations to come. They have been hand-spun, from Australian wool and we have so many gorgeous pieces that Billie wore non-stop throughout winter. We also have beautiful handknitted teddies, with a full wardrobe of tiny handknitted garments, so Billie can play dress-up when she gets a little order. So precious.

I also love the idea of creating a printed photobook, we have thousands of beautiful photo memories that I’d love to immortalise in a book. This has been on my to-do list forever, but this year will be the year!"

From Kalani

"There is some innate longing you have as a mother to press pause on time. Moments, you find yourself full of both joy and heartache all at once as you observe this tiny little person who’s just so inexplicably magical. Joy in knowing that there is a whole lifetime you get to share with them, but also heartache encompassed in some moments, knowing that those joyous little moments are so fleeting in the early years as they grow so fast and reach the next milestone so quickly.

My keepsakes have been a tether to that early season of motherhood that sometimes can get lost in the harder moments, as they grow older and become more independent little people who truly challenge you in some moments. They serve as a reminder that they are still that tiny little person who depended on me to bring them into this world, who’s souls found mine and that this special bond will never change, it lasts forever."
